Kao invests in sustainable packaging through haircare brand Guhl in Europe

Kao has launched new sustainable packaging for its Guhl haircare brand in Europe, with the bottles now being made up of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).

The shampoo bottles are made up of 50 per cent recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) while the conditioner bottles are 100 percent from the material, making them fully recyclable.

The first brand under the Kao portfolio to implement the new sustainable packaging, it is the company’s first implementation of its renewed global sustainability strategy for greener packaging.

Thanks to the recyclable materials, Kao now makes an annual saving of more than 770 metric tons of CO2, more than 520,000 liters of water and 180 metric tons of virgin PET by using rPET.

Talking about the need to maintain the quality of the bottles, Daniel Nebe, Team Leader Packaging Development at Kao EURL, said, “We wanted to use the highest possible percentage of rPET without having to accept inclusions or color distortions, which are otherwise common when using rPET,”

He continued, “Regarding the conditioner bottle, we have made sure that all packaging components are made from one material and that they can be 100% recycled back into the material flow and thus reused instead of being thermally recycled.”
